2017 Officer Wellness Finalist

Sidney (OH) Police Department

The Sidney Police Department (SPD) has been active in officer wellness for many years. The Department and city had the foresight to see a need for physical fitness standards over 15 years ago, utilizing the standards from the Cooper Fitness test as the baseline and slightly modified them to meet their agency needs.

The Sidney Police Department offers monetary bonuses for individuals who pass the test and officers can earn up to $1700 a year for maintaining top physical condition. The Department provides a place where officers can work out, by working with the City, who has paid for YMCA memberships or memberships at other approved fitness centers for each officer.

In 2016, the SPD held a mandatory class (officers and dispatchers received overtime) on First Responder Well-being. A local psychologist provided information about PTSD and other stressors that first responders must deal with and directed them to where they can get help. Confidentiality was also emphasized during the presentation.
